Answer · A short answer
How fast should a local business reply to an enquiry?
Aim for a first reply within a minute while you are open, and first thing the next morning when you are closed. The first reply does not need to settle everything. It needs to be real: answer the question if you can, and give one next step, either a booking link or a call back at a time you name. Speed matters because the person asking is usually asking someone else too.
Why a minute, not an hour
Someone looking for a haircut, a repair or a class this week rarely contacts just one business. They send three messages and book with whoever makes it easy first. An hour later, the booking has often already gone.
A minute sounds strict, but it is only possible for the first reply, and the first reply is the one that matters most. It tells the person someone is there and what happens next.
What counts as a real reply
"Thanks, we'll be in touch" is not a reply. It is a delay with manners. A real first reply answers the most likely question, such as the price, the next free time or whether you do that service, and then gives one next step.
That next step is either a booking link for the right service or a call back at a named time. If the job needs a quote or a consultation, book the consultation.
How to manage it when you are busy
Most local businesses are slow to reply because the person who would answer is with a client. So write the first replies once, for each channel, and let them go out on their own or in one tap. Send a text straight away when a call is missed.
Then name who owns the queue for each hour, including breaks. One person, not everyone.
Measure your own speed
For one week, write down every enquiry, where it came from, when it arrived and when it got a first reply. Most owners are surprised by which channel is slowest. Often it is the one nobody checks, like Google messages or the web form.
Put in your missed calls a week and see what they could be worth. Use the tool.
